Summary:

Harvard beat Union, 3-2, Friday night at Achilles Rink. First-place
Harvard outshot Union 41-25, but goaltender Mike Gallant kept the
Dutchmen in this one right until the end.

Harvard really dominated the first period. They scored twice to take
a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Harvard was probably the best
looking team to come into Achilles so far this season. Their passes
all seemed to connect and they just don't make many mistakes.

During the second period, Union finally was able to score on the
Harvard goalie Tripp Tracy, who had shut them out earlier this season
in Cambridge. It did take a 5-on-3 manpower advantage, but Ryan
Alaspa was able to take a pass from Chris Sears and put it through
Tracy's legs. Harvard came right back with a beautiful power play
goal by Chris Baird, who took a perfect pass from Ted Drury and put it
right past Gallant. At the end of the period, shots on goal were
announced as 9-4 Harvard, but the paper this morning gives Union a
10-9 shot advantage. I'm guessing the real number is somewhere in
between...

Harvard spent most of the 3rd period trying to kill off the clock.
They would just dump the puck in, let Union try to break it out and
then dump it right back in again. Not that they weren't getting shots
on goal though - Gallant made 17 saves, some spectacular ones, during
the period. Union had a power play chance with 3:31 left, and did get
a few shots on Tracy. But a good chunk of time was wasted when
Union's Dean Goulet made bad passes that went right out of the zone.
Reid Simonton earned the "Scott Whitney Award" when a pass jumped his
stick, leading to a shorthanded chance for Harvard. Union did make it
interesting with a goal to pull within one with 40 seconds left.
Chris Hancock tipped in Simonton's shot from the point to make it 3-2.
After a Union time out, and with Gallant on the bench, Union did get
into the Harvard zone once more, but couldn't get any good shots off.
Drury broke the puck out with about 5 seconds left and missed getting
an empty netter by about a second.

Overall, it was a great effort by the Dutchmen, especially by Gallant.
In a third period spent mostly right in front of him, Gallant stopped
all 17 shots he faced. This is Gallant's 3rd consecutive outstanding
perfomance, although he is still looking for his first collegiate win
(0-4-0 this season 0-15-0 career). He lowered his season goals
against to 4.15. Coach Bruce Delventhal says that he is considering
starting Gallant again on Sunday night.

The Crimson looked like a #2-ranked team at times, especially in the
first period. When they were on the power play and passing the puck
around, I found myself almost rooting for them to score. They were
much bigger and stronger than Union. Union players would try to check
a Harvard player and just bounce off. Anytime a Harvard player went
down, it was probably because 2 Union players were working on him, or
Union was headed for the box. The one thing that was really missing
for Harvard was emotion. They just didn't seem all that interested.
Even when they scored, there was no celebration. They would just
skate back to the bench and go on with their jobs.

The referees were Frank Murphy and Pierre Belanger. I don't remember
seeing Belanger here before, although I've definitely heard about him.
I don't think anyone would complain about the officiating as it seemed
pretty even.

It was also the biggest crowd of the season so far at Achilles with
2,316 (capacity is 2504). Even with the loss the crowd showed their
appreciation for the Dutchmen's effort.

Harvard remains undefeated and in first place in the ECAC with a
12-0-1 record, 13-1-1 overall. Union falls to 2-7 in the league and
2-10 overall. With the loss by Dartmouth, the Dutchmen stay 2 points
out of playoff position. Union will host Dartmouth on Sunday night at
7. Tonight at 6:30 is the Union Hockey Alumni game at Achilles Rink.
