The Portland Pirates named Mark Kumpel head coach, only the third head
coach in team history. Kumpel guided the Dayton Bombers in the East Coast
Hockey League to a 36-26-8 record, gaining third place in the Northwest
Division.
He replaces Bryan Trottier, former NY Islander star, who left Portland in
June to become an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche.
 
Former UMaine hockey players have been on the Portland Pirates squad.
