Alright here are some hard numbers from USA Today.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sncaa037.htm
Of the 107 Div. IA football programs in the 1995 season 27% lost money,
64.5% made money (lots of money) and 9.5% didn't report. The schools that
lost money are:
Georgia Tech
Temple
North Texas
New Mexico State
Utah State
Ala. Birmingham
Cincinnati
Memphis
Tulane
Akron
Ball State
Bowling Green
C. Michigan
E. Michigan
Kent
Miami (Ohio)
N. Illinois
Ohio U
Toledo
W. Michigan
New Mexico
SMU
Tulsa
UNLV
Wyoming
Arkansas St.
C. Florida
Louisiana Tech
SW Louisiana
The schools that didn't report are:
Boston College
Miami (Fla.)
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
Kansas St.
Boise St.
Houston
Rice
UTEP
This leaves 69 schools that made a lot of money at football. Money that
paid for women's athletics. I don't have the numbers for Div. IAA.
Football brings in money for the school in other ways not reported here;
exposure and donations. Roster trimming is a great idea for financially
strapped schools. If every men's sport cut two players and every women's
sport added two players, you have just added the equivalent of two women's
sports.
It looks like the schools in the MAC are hit the hardest. Not one school
makes money at football. Can somebody there let me know what they are
doing about Title IX?
By the way Wisconsin is going to add two women's sport in the next 5 years
and lacrosse and ice hockey are at the top of the list.
