Agreed. SCSU had trouble getting much pressure at all on Dauber, especially
after the first period.

This goes back to a discussion on HOCKEY-L last year on "what makes an
assist." Kuk put the puck on net, causing the SCSU goalie to go down and
make the save. The puck squirts out and an SCSU defender desperately tries
to clear the puck, instead feeding Gruden beautifully for an open-net goal.
One way to look at it is that Gruden was the only Badger to touch the puck
after a SCSU player had played it, so no assist. The official scorer
judged Kuk's initial shot to be an integral part of the play leading to the
goal, and awarded the assist. Personally, I agree with the call. Since
the SCSU defender never really "controlled" the puck, it's similar to a
play where Player A has his shot saved by the goalie, and Player B buries
the rebound, in which an assist clearly goes to Player A.

Yep, you read that right, a power-play goal by the Badgers. Let's hope
this new season breaks the time-honored tradition of weak Badger power
plays.

Other game notes: Hard to gauge the team after one game against an
out-of-sync opponent, but this year's Badgers seemed to be working hard,
which is a good sign. Mark Johnson looks dapper in coat and tie as the new
assistant coach on the bench. And finally, I will really miss Paul Braun
and especially goalie coach Bill Howard doing pbp and color for the delayed
telecast of home games. Best of luck to the new guys; it's hard to get
used to the new voices. (The new pbp announcer seemed kinda nervous, and
the color guy (Andringa?) was solid and interesting.) FYI, the live radio
broadcast is now made up of one half of each of the former two broadcast
teams: Paul Braun from the aforementioned Braun/Howard combo and Wisconsin
State Journal reporter Bill Brophy from the Swanson/Brophy team.

Drop the puck!
