Tortorella did indeed score a goal, but it was in 1980, not 1978.
Drew Finnie devotes an entire paragraph to Tortorella's feat in
the 1981 ECAC Championship program. He calls Tortorella "the first
ECAC netminder in history to score an unassisted, shorthanded goal."
It occurred in the RPI Invitational against Vasby, a Swedish amateur
team. Vasby was a man up with three minutes to go in the game.
Tortorella "made a routine clearing of the puck," which slid down
the ice and bounced off the stick of the Vasby goalie and into the
net. Maine won the game, 12-2.
