Headline: U hockey freshman has successful surgery
Publish Date: 05/05/1995

Gophers hockey defenseman Jason Godbout underwent successful
open-heart surgery Thursday to repair a small hole between his left
and right atriums.

The surgery began at 8:53 a.m at United Hospital in St. Paul and
lasted for approximately 90 minutes. Godbout's brother Brent said the
surgery went well enough that doctors did not need to put Godbout in
intensive care afterward.

Brent said his brother was experiencing discomfort, which was
expected following open-heart surgery.

``He's in a lot of pain right now,'' said Brent, a sophomore forward
on the Gophers hockey team. ``They've got him on a lot of
painkillers. He's on morphine and an anesthetic, so he's pretty out
of it. He said it feels like he got run over by a bus.''

Brent said Jason will be administered pain-killers until Saturday,
but doctors expect to put Jason on a treadmill today and he could
leave the hospital as early as Tuesday.
