There are definately areas in Providence that don't *look* safe.  That
combined with the fact that a friend (who is over six feet, around 200
pounds) was beaten up in the city while simply walking home makes
Providence one of those cities  I wouldn't walk around at night by myself.
 
Granted, it probably doesn't have any more violence problems than any other
city, but that's the perception I've gotten from my visits.
 
And this from someone who used to take the cross-town bus in the South
Bronx every day.
