I'm changing the formula for calculating RPICH as of this week. The
formula, which attempts to be the same as that used in calculating the
Rating Percentage Index for baseball, basketball, and hockey, has been
(winning percentage * 20%) + (opponents' winning percentage * 40%) +
(opponents' opponents' winning percentage * 40%). According to an article
that appeared in The_Post-Standard of Syracuse, NY, on February 23, the
Rating Percentage Index now weights those three factors by 25%, 50%, and 25%
respectively. RPICH now also includes Div1 games played by Mass Amherst, in
recognition of its status as an affiliate member of Hockey East. Here's the
new, improved RPICH for this week, followed by a report using the old
formula for comparison. The 20-40-40 formula will not appear after this week.

Any questions should be addressed directly to me. If there is sufficient
interest, I will summarize and report back to the list.

Thanks to Bill Fenwick for finding the relevant article in The_Post-Standard.

Rating Percentage Index for College Hockey, compiled by Erik Biever

This report includes the 663 games through 02/27/94 between teams eligible
for the Division 1 tournament plus Mass Amherst. To remain consistent with
NCAA statistical bylaws, Maine's forfeited wins over Providence are counted
as victories for Maine.

RPICH is calculated by the Rating Percentage Index method, used as a tool
in selecting teams for the national collegiate tournaments in basketball,
baseball, and hockey. Ratings are derived by summing each team's winning
percentage, the average winning percentage of its opponents, and the average
winning percentage of its opponents' opponents, multiplied by 25%, 50%, and
25% respectively. Factors such as home ice and margin of victory are not
included. No individual game is weighted more heavily than any other.
RPICH IS PRODUCED INDEPENDENTLY OF THE NCAA.
