Analysis:

Early on, both teams looked really sloppy. Colgate eased into a very physical,
chippy style of play, while BU couldn't seem to function as a team. The
2-referee combo seemed to result in only tons of penalties, particularly in
the 2nd period which had 24 minutes of penalties dished out! Soapbox aside,
BU's weakness on defense was evident in the 1st and 3rd periods. Herlofsky
came up with some big-game saves, one coming on a point-blank wrist shot by
Brad Dexter at about 10:00 of the 3rd period. BU defensemen could be heard ca
calling for backup from forwards all night--not good! Colgate was chippy
until 3rd period, after deBlois spent a total of 10 mins. in the box.
Colgate has some speed up front in Fogarty and Dickson, and Haddock is
returning some strength to defense from last season. Murray was pepperred all
night but had some key saves early on on Pomichter and Lilley that could have
broken it open for BU. Colgate controlled the 1st period with their agressive
fore-checking that really stymied BU defense, but BU shifted the momentum in
the early second period on Prendergast's goal that finally bore fruit for
the Terriers. The second showed Colgate's frustration as BU adapted to their
chippy style of play and controlled the puck better than in the 1st.
BU's 4 goals in the 2nd really deflated Colgate, and they just couldn't keep
up the tempo they showed in the first. In the 3rd, BU eased back to cushion
the lead a little bit, and played dump-and-chase. Colgate began to tire
pretty quickly but remained physical. The refs let lots go in the 3rd,
to Colgate's advantage. Herlofsky was solid and may give Cashman a run for his
money for the #1 job. (Parker has said he'll only play 2 goalies this season
as opposed to the 3-man rotation last year).
My biggest worry is the lack of depth on defense--it looked shaky all night,
and the Terriers simply can't afford to give many power-play opportunites.
This area can really haunt them, as I think we'll see against teams like
Maine and Providence. In the first period Rich Brennan never even saw a pass
back to him at the point until Red Raider forward Andrew Dickson came in
all alone on Herlofsky (who made the split save). If BU keeps making simple
careless mistakes on defense then opponents will not have much difficulty.
This an area that needs to be improved.

Congrats to Coach Parker on his 400th career win!

Next weekend BU faces RPI (in Troy) on 11/6, then Merrimack on 11/8.
