          HOCKEY DOWNS SALEM STATE, 2-1
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team used an opportunistic offense and a storng defense to defeat visiting Salem State, 2-1 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.
The Corsairs, who scored twice in the first period, jumped out on top when senior forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored on the game’s first shot. After senior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) won the opening face-off, Stahl took a pass from sophomore defenseman Ricky Miller (Colorado Springs, CO/Northern Cyclones) and beat SSU senior goaltender James LaCour (Silver Spring, MD/Walpole Stars_ eight seconds into the game.
UMass Dartmouth scored a power play goal to take a 2-0 lead. Viking junior forward Justin Roy (North Bay, ON/North Bay) was issued a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct at 11:13 of the first period. Sophomore forward Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) made it 2-0 when he slipped a rebound past LaCour at the 13:16 mark. Sophomore forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) and junior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) drew the assists.
SSU cut the lead in half when sophomore forward Derek Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) scored at 7:49 of the second period. Junior defenseman Matthew Genovese (Hingham, MA/Berkshire Academy) and sophomore forward Chris Costigan (Salem, NH/Mass Cyclones) assisted. The Vikings out shot the Corsairs in the third period, 11-6, and pulled LaCour for an extra attacker, but couldn’t beat UMD senior goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) a second time.

“It was a significant early season win,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It was a real hard hat, lunch bucket, UMD will to win type of game. It was back and forth, Collin Tracy played great, we did a good job killing penalties, and we got a power play goal for the win.”
The Vikings out shot the Corsairs, 29-23. Tracy made 28 saves while LaCour stopped 23 shots.
The Corsairs improved to 4-1-1 and 2-0-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while the Vikings fell to 4-1-0 and 2-1-0 in the MASCAC with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Worcester State Thursday evening. Salem State will host Framingham State Thursday evening.
