CORSAIRS SET TOUGH SCHEDULE FOR 2007-08 SEASON

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA– A tough schedule awaits the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team as they seek to defend their Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast championship and return to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The Corsairs will host nationally ranked Babson and participate in a prestigious holiday tournament, as well as playing a full ECAC Northeast schedule.

UMass Dartmouth opens its schedule with road games at Becker and Stonehill before returning home to open the 2007-08 season against conference opponent Plymouth State. Three nights later, the Corsairs will take on nationally-ranked Babson, which is currently eighth in the United States College Hockey Online.com pre-season poll.

Saturday, December 1st will see UMass Dartmouth visit perennial power Curry, who the Corsairs defeated in the 2006 ECAC Northeast championship game, and again during the regular season last year. After the holiday break, UMass Dartmouth will head to Norwich to participate in the prestigious Times-Argus Tournament, where they will play the host Cadets, another perennial Division III power. Babson and St. Olaf are the other two teams in the field.

The second semester is heavily oriented towards home contests. After a home game against Worcester State January 19th and three games on the road, UMass Dartmouth will play five consecutive home contests, including four league games. They will finish by playing three of their final four regular season games at home, including a matchup against Wentworth, which defeated UMass Dartmouth during the regular season last year before the Corsairs turned the tables in the conference championship game.

“We’re the team that’s being hunted, having won back-to-back ECAC regular season and playoff championships,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli, whose team has gone 42-3 in the last three seasons against league foes. “Once again, we are playing another ambitious schedule, playing the largest NCAA Division III conference in the country with 16 teams. We also have a very ambitious non-league schedule, highlighted by our invitational to the Times-Argus Tournament, in which three of the four teams in the field made the NCAA Tournament last season. We also have Babson and UMass Boston of the ECAC East coming to play us this year, and we play two schools from the NESCAC, Wesleyan and Connecticut College.”

The Babson game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Arena January 20th will also mark a milestone for the Corsair hockey team. “That game will mark the 800th game for our program,” said Rolli. “Our record is 580-194-22 for a .743 winning percentage in the first 796 games.” The Corsairs have also won 29 consecutive games at Hetland Arena since losing to Plymouth State two years ago in their season opener.
