MEN'S HOCKEY FALLS TO #10 COLGATE, 4-2
Raiders rely on special teams to move into first place in ECACHL

Tenth-ranked Colgate University got three special teams goals, including
two shorthanded, and defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 4-2,
in an ECAC Hockey League men's hockey game at the Houston Field House in
Troy, N.Y.

With the victory, the 10th-ranked Raiders improve to 16-5-0 overall and
8-1-0 in the ECACHL.  They have now won eight of their last nine games and
move into a first place tie with Vermont in the league standings (14
points).  The Engineers fall to 9-13-2 overall and 2-8-1 in the league.

Both teams scored special teams goals in the first period, ending the
stanza tied 1-1.  Colgate senior Dave Thomas put the visitors in front when
he finished a two-on-one with Jon Smyth for a shorthanded goal at the 5:52
mark.  The goal was the sixth of the year for Thomas.  The Engineers
countered just 52 seconds later when sophomore defenseman Jake Luthi sent a
slapshot into the top right corner with RPI on a 5-on-3 power play.  Nick
Economakos and Brad Farynuk earned the assists on the goal, Luthi's fourth
of the season.

Colgate scored three times in the second period, including two from
freshman center Tyler Burton, to take a commanding 4-1 lead after
two.  Burton made it 2-1 when he slid the puck into the back of the net
from just outside of the crease at 2:25.  The freshman scored his second of
the night  his second two-goal game in the last three  and tenth of the
season when he finished a Raiders 5-on-3 power play from the right side of
the cage at 8:22.  Smyth picked up his second assist of the night, while
Adam Mitchell earned his first point of the game.  Mitchell put the
visitors ahead by three goals with just 1:57 left in the middle stanza when
he stole the puck at center ice and scored on his own rebound for a
shorthanded goal.  His unassisted tally was his eighth goal of the year.

Farynuk pulled the Engineers to within two goals with a 5-on-3 goal of his
own at 9:21 of the third period.  Junior Kevin Croxton and Luthi were
credited with the assists on the goal, Farynuk's third of the season.

Steve Silverthorn finished with 22 saves to improve to 15-4-0 on the
season.  Andrew Martin stopped 25 shots in the loss to fall to 4-9-1.

Rensselaer is right back home on Saturday night when the tenth-ranked Big
Red of Cornell visit the Houston Field House for a 7pm ECACHL
contest.  Colgate will play at league foe Union on Saturday at 7pm.
