MEN'S HOCKEY COMES BACK FOR WIN
Engineers score twice in third period for 4-3 win over Providence

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) got two goals in the third period,
including Scott Romfo's game-winner with 5:11 remaining in the final
period, for a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Providence College in a
non-league Division I men's hockey game in front of a crowd of 2,408 at the
Houston Field House. With the victory, which is RPI's first when trailing
after two periods (1-8-1), the Engineers improve to 8-8-2. Providence
falls to 5-9-2.

Providence got on the board first when sophomore Chase Watson slid a shot
underneath Rensselaer netminder Jordan Alford at 9:34 of the first
period. Jamie Carroll and James Pemberton earned the assists on the
play. The Engineers tied the game 6:15 later when defenseman Jake Luthi
slid down from the point and scored from just outside of the crease for a
power play goal. Kevin Croxton, who was stationed behind the net, earned
the primary assist while Kirk MacDonald had the secondary helper.

Jon Rheault put the visitors back in front when he made a nice move around
a defenseman and scored from the bottom of the right face-off
circle. Rheault's goals, which was set up by Tony Zancanaro and Bryan
Horan, came at 8:24 of the second period. RPI's Vic Pereira tied the game
when he deflected a pass from MacDonald to finish a two-on-one break at
11:17 of the period. Providence took its third lead when Nate Myers
deflected a Dinos Stamoulis shot over Alford just over a minute after
Rensselaer tied the game.

Rensselaer again came back to tie the score, this time when Kevin Broad
slipped a shot past Providence netminder David Cacciola just 2:40 into the
third period. Luthi earned his first career assist when he passed the puck
from behind the net. Romfo put the Engineers ahead for the first time when
he skated in tight toward the goaltender and scored on a rebound of an Oren
Eizenman shot.

Alford finished with 23 saves for the win, including 11 in the third
period, while Cacciola stopped 25 shots in the loss.

Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday night when its hosts 14th-ranked
Boston University at 7pm at the Houston Field House. Providence is idle
until the face 10th-ranked Vermont on December 29 in the Ledyard Bank
Tournament at Dartmouth.
