An impressive, never-quit performance by Union turned what had been a
shutout bid by Brown senior goaltender Yann Danis into a 2-2 draw at Meehan
Auditorium this evening. The Skating Dutchmen pulled goalie Kris Mayotte
twice in the last two minutes of regulation and scored two 6x5 goals to send
the game into overtime. During the extra period, Union continued to
dominate play, outshooting the Bears 6-3 and enjoying a 5x4 power play
called with 2:54 left to play, but were unable to beat Danis for the winning
score. As it turned out, the Bears were fortunate to come away with one
point when it seemed they were on the verge of posting still another narrow
victory. Kudos to the Skating Dutchmen who skated hard all night and
refused to fold when the clock would down below three minutes in regulation.

Brown captain and senior defenseman Scott Ford gave the Bears an first
period lead at 15:46 when he scored unassisted on a bizarre wrist shot from
three feet outside the offensive blue line which flew past Mayotte when he
was screened by one of his defensemen on the play. Brown increased its lead
at 5:02 of the middle stanza on a pretty set-up by sophomore forward Cory
Caouette who got loose in neutral ice, rushed down the left wing, and found
junior forward Chris Swon streaking down the slot with a pass from the left
special spot. Swon's wrister beat Mayotte cleanly to his glove side for a
2-0 Bear lead.

There would be no additional scoring until Union coach Nate Leaman
pulled Mayotte in favor of a sixth attacker with about 2:20 to play and the
Skating Dutchmen jammed the Brown goalmouth allowing sophomore forward Jason
Visser to poke the puck past Danis at 17:34. Senior defenseman Brent Booth
and senior forward Glenn Sanders were credited with assists on the goal. On
the ensuing faceoff in neutral ice, Union won the draw, Leaman replaced
Mayotte once again, and after setting up in the Bear zone, got the puck to
junior defenseman Matt Vagvolgyi who fired a rising shot from the top of the
right faceoff circle that Danis did not see until the puck was by his right
shoulder and into top corner of the net.

Hobey Baker candidate Danis logged a game total of 42 saves, while
Mayotte saved 33 shots in the Union net.

Brown must now regroup and prepare to meet the Rensselaer Engineers in a
Valentine's Night game at Meehan tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. It surely won't be
hearts and flowers in what is likely to be an intense and hard-fought
contest, but with RPI's cherry and white uniforms, at least the colors will
be appropriate for the holiday.
