MEN'S HOCKEY COMES BACK TO DOWN KNIGHTS
Engineers score three in third period to win 27th Annual Freakout!

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) scored three goals in the third
period, including two on the power play, to defeat Clarkson University,
4-2, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) contest before a
standing room only crowd of 5,159 in the 27th Annual Big Red Freakout!
at
the Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y. With the win, the Engineers
improve
to 15-11-2 overall and 9-6-1 in the ECAC. They extend their Freakout!
unbeaten streak to 14 straight years (10-0-4). The Golden Knights fall
to
11-12-5 and 6-8-2.

After a scoreless first period that featured four power plays for
Clarkson
and two for Rensselaer, the Knights got on the board at 4:10 of the
second
period. Senior center Trevor Edwards gave the visitors a 1-0 lead when
he
wristed a Michael Grenzy pass into the back of the net. Edwards, who
earned his eighth of the season, was stationed just outside the crease
on
the left side when he tallied. Brodie Rutherglen was also credited with
a
helper on the play. Freshman defenseman Matt Nickerson doubled
Clarkson's
lead when he notched his fifth of the season from the right faceoff dot
at
7:12 of the period. Rob McFeeters and Jay Latulippe were credited with
the
assists on the play. RPI sophomore Kirk MacDonald got the goal back for
the Engineers when he deflected a Brad Farynuk shot underneath Clarkson
goaltender Dustin Traylen for a power play goal at 13:16 of the middle
stanza. For MacDonald, who was also assisted by Kevin Croxton, the goal
was his 12th of the season. And for Rensselaer, the extra man goal
marked
the tenth time it has scored at least one power play goal.

RPI knotted the game at 2-2 when freshman Oren Eizenman scored a power
play
goal at 13:24 of the third period. Eizenman tallied his fourth of the
season on a wristshot from the right faceoff circle off a pass from
defenseman Matt McNeely. Senior Ben Barr also assisted the goal. Barr
put
the Engineers ahead at 8:55 when he scored a power play goal of his own
from the bottom of the left faceoff circle. Eizenman earned an assist on
the goal. Freshman Kevin Broad added an empty net goal from his own
blueline with 30 seconds left to increase Rensselaer's lead to
4-2. Farynuk assisted on the goal.

Rensselaer, which was 3 for 9 on the power play, got xx saves from
senior
Nathan Marsters. The Golden Knights, who were 0 for 10 with the extra
man,
saw Traylen, a sophomore, stop 32 shots, including 18 in the third
period.

The Engineers return to action on Friday night when they will travel to
Harvard for an ECAC contest at 7pm. Clarkson will host ECAC-rival
Vermont
next Friday at 7pm.
