Union's Koenig captures ECAC Player of the Week

SCHENECTADY - Union goalkeeper Trevor Koenig learned after Tuesday's
practice that he was named Player of the Week by the Eastern College
Athletic Conference.
        Koenig will receive a certificate from the ECAC for his performances
against Clarkson and St. Lawrence last weekend. He made 40 saves in a
3-2 loss to Clarkson last Friday, then stopped 34 shots in the 2-1
victory over St. Lawrence last Saturday.
        Koenig, a junior from Edmonton, Alberta, said he owed his success
to a time when he wasn't playing at all. He was benched for three straight
games last month, and he used the layoff to repair small flaws.
        "When you get a chance to step back a bit, I think you get educated,"
said Koenig, who watched backupp Leeor Shtrom start against RPI twice and
Brown. "I wasn't paying attention to the little things. Sitting back and
watching the game from the sides, you actually pick up a few things that
you wouldn't normally pick up in the heat of the battle."
        Koenig still said he allowed too many second and third rebound chances
last weekend.
        "I think I got pretty luck, to tell you the truth," he said. "I
gave out a lot of rebounds and I looked over the tape and could see some
thins I could improve."
