This is not that unusual, especially where HE and ECAC teams are concerned.
A preliminary HE schedule that I have shows the following games for next
season (the schedule is not complete):

Oct 25-26 Colgate & Union at Maine & UNH
Nov 1-2 Merrimack & Providence at Colgate & Union
Nov 29-30 BU & BC at St Lawrence & Clarkson
Jan 10-11 Clarkson & St Lawrence at Mass Lowell & UNH

It is easier to do in the East because the Eastern conferences have more NC
games available and because teams are closer together. However, last
season we saw a number of series where two CCHA teams played at two ECAC
teams on a weekend. It can be done, but it does require a lot of things to
work out right, such as needing to arrange the games around conference
schedules.

At the same time, as I understand it, HE at least does not get involved in
scheduling NC games for its teams. I don't know if this is the same with
other conferences, but it does mean that it can be harder to work a trip
around the conference schedules of the opponents.
