Adam quoted, in part ...
>"Colleges: Eligibility violations surface at Maine"

I hadn't posted anything on this sense the ice hockey team players
transcripts haven't been analysed yet; the emphasis now is the
impact on Fall sports. The football and field hockey teams are
affected and it appears the soccer teams are not affected. Team
counts have not been made available and affected individual student
athletes have not been publicly identified.

The eligibility problem (expected to be the last of Maine's
*eligibility* NCAA compliance problems) is (as I recall) with Section
14.4.3.1.5 of the NCAA rules. This rule states that student athletes by
their 3rd year (or 5th semester or 9th quarter) must have chosen a
"program of study" or major and that the 24 credit hours per year
requirement is then 24 hours *in* *the* *program* *of* *study*. That
is, the student athlete must make 24 credit hours of progress during the
previous year. Courses that count as credit, but not applicable to the
program of study are not counted by the NCAA. This rule was instituted
in 1981.

Maine says that they misinterpreted the rule. IMHO they (we? ouch)
ignored or more probably were ignorant of the rule until the middle of
this month.

As you might appreciate, ensuring compliance with this rule wrt any
individual transcript is a tedious process, and so Winter and Spring
sport athletes won't be analysed until the Fall sport athlete analysis
is complete. The University is suggesting that the student athletes are
free of any guilt in these cases, since the advice they received from
everyone at the school was wrong. The NCAA may rule on some or all of
the cases this week. If so, those athletes may be eligible for this
weekends competition.

Previous year's records will be analysed once this years analysis is
complete.

Have a nice day, :-)
