This isn't exactly college hockey content, but it does sound like it
could involve some of the hockey players, since it was an error that
involved the standard policy for all student-athletes. :(

From today's [August 31st, 1994] Boston Globe

"Colleges: Eligibility violations surface at Maine"

The University of Maine isn't sure if any of its football players
will have to sit out Saturday's game with powrful Central Florida at
Orono. The university said and apparent misinterpretation of an NCAA
rule governing athletes' progress toward graduation could date back a
decade or more. The mistake, announced Monday, was the latest in a
string of student-athlete eligibility violations that surfaced at the
university during the past year. "The intent here was not to cheat,
to connive, to steal, to play under the table, etc., etc.," said
Walter H. Abbot, interim athletic director. "It was
misinterpretation." The university said it misinterpreted an NCAA
bylaw requiring student-athletes to complete at least 24 credit hours
a year to remain eligible. Although the rule requires that all 24
credits count toward a student's specific major, Maine had been giving
credit for all completed courses.
