A penalty is a penalty is a penalty and should be called at any point
during a game. The job of the referee is to interpret and enforce the
rules to ensure fair play. There is no rule, written or unwritten,
that says officials should put away the rule book at the end of any
game. The officials can't be faulted for calling whatthey see. If
anyone should be criticized for such a situation arising late in an
important game (games at any point in the season are important to
league standings), it is the player who prompted the call.
