Let's play "what if"
What if UAF joins the WCHA. That would mean 11 teams, and more
scheduling problems.
One solution would be to split into 2 divisions (in the early 70s
the wcha had divisions).
I would propose:
WCHA-west:
UAF, UAA, Denver, Colorado College, North Dakota
each team plays each west team 4 times: 2 home, 2 road (16 games)
each team plays each east team 2 times 2 home or 2 road (12 games)
total: 28 league games
WCHA-east:
Minnesota, Minnesota-Duluth, St. Cloud State
Wisconsin, Northern Michigan, Michigan Tech,
each team plays each east team 4 times: 2 home, 2 road (20 games)
each team plays each west team 2 times: 2 home or 2 road (10 games)
total: 30 league games
Well, it isn't balanced. The west needs one more team. Or some other variation.
Playoffs (this is really funky):
1 - 5 other division
2 - 4 other division
3 - 3 other division
(6 east is out)
Actually, the best plan was Rick Comley's (did I spell that right?) idea
of merging the CCHA and the WCHA and then splitting into THREE divisions...
