>Proposal 12
>Identifies sports such as archery, team handball, badminton, bowling, crew,
>ICE HOCKEY and squash as "emerging sports," allowing schools to sponsor them
>to provide more athletic opportunities for women.

Hmm. The NC$$ thinks hockey rates right up there with team handball!! Is
this a promotion of sorts? Last I heard they thought of hockey like they
thought of lawn bowling and darts! :-)

One other thing. BOWLING?? BOWLING?? There are bowling teams? There are
bowling scholarships?? I, for one, would love to hear about bowling
recruiting violations! Now we know the real reason Penn State went to the
Big 10, their bowling league was better!!

>Proposal 17
>Would give athletes five years of eligibility and do away with redshirting.
> [So much for Steve Shields' untouchable victory total.]

This is what has been done in the CIAU (Canadian Universities) for as long
as I can remember. It makes sense to me.

>Proposal 24
>Would ban in-person scouting of opponents in football and basketball.

Why? I don't see what's wrong with advance scouting.

>Proposal 42
>Allows men's basketball to offer 14 scholarships, restoring one of the two
>scholarships that were taken away by the NCAA Presidents Commission. [When
>was the last time you saw a team use 14 players in a basketball game? If
>these proportions were transferred to hockey, we would have 30 scholarships
>and 5 assistant coaches. Give me a break.]

I don't see what's wrong with it. Allowing 14 scholarships lets a team have
freshmen on its roster who can't contribute right away, but have potential,
and bring them along. This lets a team be better able to refresh its roster,
since there is complete turnover every four or five years.

>Proposal 44
>Limits football teams to 105 players. [Shouldn't there be a proposal 44B
>limiting football teams to 60 players? Come on, the NFL gets by with far
>less than that. Not only do football teams have a bizillion players, but
>they have about half a bizillion scholarships to spread around.]

I guess the flip side of this is that football teams bring in bizillions of
dollars to Athletic Departments. One look at Michigan Stadium on Saturday
afternoons in the fall should make that abundantly clear. BTW, NFL rosters
are 53 players.

>Proposal 120
>Would allow basketball players to make themselves available for the NBA
>draft and then have 30 days to decide whether to turn pro or remain in
>school. [What's that? I've been selected by Denver? Well, I guess I can
>stay at Hoops U. with my full ride scholarship, $20,000 pocket money, new
>car and condo in the 'burbs for ONE more year.]

I think there are some legal challenges that caused this. Apparently Chris
Webber had said that, if he were drafted by the Mavs and the NC$$ wouldn't
let him go back to Michigan, he would sue the NC$$ for violating his civil
rights. I think it had something to do with cruel and unusual punishment. :)

See you later,
John
