I think I can answer my own question on this one.  Since both the ECAC East
and West have teams that are not able to qualify for the DivIII tourney
(like Canisius in the West and UConn in the East), it would throw a monkey
wrench into everything if those conferences got automatic bids to the DivIII
tourney but an unqualified team won the conference tourney.  But as far as
the SUNYAC goes, all of the teams are DivIII, so there's no danger of something
similar happening there.
