Press Release from RPI's SID:

MEN'S HOCKEY STOPS SLIDE WITH SHUTOUT
Palmer & Marsters combine for 33 saves in 3-0 win

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team, inspired by the first career start by senior walk-on James Palmer, stifled the Bowling Green Falcons, 3-0, in a non-league contest this evening at the Houston Field House in Troy, NY. The Engineers, who entered the game on a five-game winless streak (0-4-1) and four-game losing streak, improve to 8-9-2. The Falcons, who are led by former RPI head coach Buddy Powers, are now 6-15-4.

Palmer, a native of Plattsburgh, NY, started the game having played in two games for a total of 7:34 in his first three and a half seasons at Rensselaer. He stopped all 12 shots he faced in the first period before being replaced by Nathan Marsters to start the second period. Marsters played the final two periods and finished with 21 saves.

After a scoreless first period, the Engineers' Matt Murley broke the scoreless tie when he scored on his own rebound at 16:45 of the first period. Murley, a senior from Troy, NY, took a pass from Carson Butterwick, skated up ice and shot on Tyler Masters. Masters made the initial save but left a rebound in front, which Murley deposited for his 13 th goal of the season and fourth in the last two games.

RPI made it 2-0 at 9:40 of the third period when sophomore Marc Cavosie ripped a wrist shot from the right circle for his 11 th goal of the year. Cavosie took a pass from Murley and one-timed a wrister past Masters for his fifth point (1 goal, 4 assists) in his last two games. Butterwick also picked up an assist on the goal, his sixth of the season. An unassisted goal by senior Andrew McPherson put the Engineers ahead, 3-0.

Rensselaer, which recorded its first shutout of the season, and Bowling Green will meet again on Saturday evening at 7pm at the Houston Field House.
