UMaine Women Drop 5-3 Hockey Game to Providence
ORONO, MAINE- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team overcame a
two-goal deficit but still lost to visiting Providence College 5-3.
The loss dropped UMaine to 7-9-1 overall, 1-6-1 in the ECAC. Providence
improved to 6-8-2, 3-4-1.
After PC scored two first-period period goals, UMaine tied the game in the
second 20 minutes. Tracy Caridade scored a power-play goal 3:46 into the
second period with assists from Jarin Sjogren and Kelly Nelson. Sophomore
Karen Droog then tallied the first of her two goals at 9:01 of that period.
Sjogren assisted again to tie the game at 2-2.
The Friars answered with a power-play goal 17:24 into the second period.
Carrie Holldorf notched her sixth goal of the season off assists from
Darlene Stephenson and Melanie Ruzzi. Jenn Butsch added an unassisted goal
38 seconds later that proved to be the game winner.
Droog breathed life into a Maine comeback with her 14th goal of the season
at the 3:14 mark. She was assisted by Nelson and Rebecca Ouellet. The Black
Bears appeared to have tied the game later in the period but a goal was
nullified due to a high stick.
Providence's Stephenson added an empty net goal with 15 seconds left to
close the scoring.
Lara Smart made 19 saves for UMaine while Providence's Amy Thomas picked up
the win with 24 stops, including nine in the final period.
The Black Bears return to action Sunday when they play host to the
University of Connecticut.
