MAINE DEFEATS OHIO STATE 6-2
Black Bears to face Northern Michigan in Championship Game

ESTERO, Fla. - Martin Kariya (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and Don
Richardson (Holbrook, N.Y.) each scored two goals and Niko Dimitrakos
(Somerville, Mass.) tallied his 100th career point as the University of
Maine ice hockey team defeated Ohio State 6-2 in the first round of the
Everblades College Hockey Classic in Estero, Fla. With the win, Maine
improves to 9-5-3 on the season, while Ohio State falls to 9-7-1.

Maine opened the scoring just 1:06 into the contest when Kariya scored his
fourth goal of the season from Michael Schutte (Burlington, Ontario) and
Colin Shields (Glasgow Scotland). Prestin Ryan (Arcola, Saskatchewan) netted
a power play goal, his third of the season, just 3:38 later as Maine took a
2-0 lead.

The Black Bears took a two goal lead into the second period. Richardson
scored his first goal of the season at the 2:35 mark which proved to be the
eventual game-winner. Lucas Lawson (Braeside, Ontario) tallied his fifth
goal of the season from Peter Metcalf (Pembroke, Mass.) and Niko Dimitrakos.
Dimitrakos becomes the 38th player in UMaine history to score 100 points or
more. Kariya closed out the scoring in the second period when he took the
puck from a Buckeye and put it past Ohio State netminder Mike Betz. The
Black Bears took a commanding 5-0 lead into the third period.

Ohio State finally got on the board in the third period when Pete Broccoli
scored his first of the night at 1:12 to cut the Maine lead to 5-1.
Richardson netted his second of the night 4:44 later from Ben Murphy (North
Andover, Mass.). Both Metcalf and Murphy had two assists on the night.
Broccoli added a second goal of the night for Ohio State to make the final
6-2. Ohio State registered 20 shots on goal in the final period to finish
the night with a 38-35 advantage in shots.

Mike Morrison (Medford, Mass.) stopped 36 shots, including 18 in the final
frame, to pick up his sixth win of the season as he improves to 6-1-1.
Morrison stopped the first 18 shots that he faced to take a 5-0 lead into
the final period. Mike Betz made 23 saves in net for Ohio State in 40
minutes of play while Kelly Holowaty played the final 20 minutes and stopped
six shots.

Maine will face Northern Michigan in the championship game of the Everblades
College Hockey Classic on Sunday, December 30 at 7:30 p.m. The Northern
Michigan Wildcats recorded a 4-3 double overtime victory over Cornell. Ohio
State will face Cornell in the consolation game at 4:00 p.m. at Teco Arena
in Estero, Fla.
