Mark Lewin <[log in to unmask]> wrote in part in reponse to a message of
mine about an RPI-Colgate game from January 1968:

That is what I remember also, although it might have been a year
less because Freshmen were not yet eligible. However, it turned out
that the RPI-Colgate series was resumed with only a one-year hiatus.

Well because I was off from work yesterday, I dug out my scorecard
for that game. The game was called at 19:10 of the second period
with Colgate leading 5-1. RPI was in the midst of killing off a
two-minute slashing penalty to defenseman Brian Dickey when the
fights started. Eight Colgate players and seven RPI players were
given 5-minute majors for fighting and game misconducts. Because
the rules stated that a second player must be in the box to serve
each major and the roster limit was only 17 in those days, RPI would
have had two players left (as I stated one player was already in the
penalty box) and Colgate would have had one player left. Four
players must be on the ice at all times -- so the game was ended.
The game was awarded to Colgate because they were leading.

I did not record the names of the 15 players receiving the penalties,
and my memory (which does play tricks) tells me that they were never
announced, although it might have been that I just could not hear
Don Birkmeyer's voice through all the crowd noise.

As I stated in my previous message, Mike Machnik said that this
situation was not uncommon in the dayts before fighting majors
carried disqualifications of subsequent cames.
