Results for first day of the 13th Auld Lang Syne tournament:

game 1: U. Vt. 9 - UIC 8
University of Illinois, Chicago lost to Univ. Vermont 9-8 in a wild game that
looked like a pond-hockey game. There was very little defense in evidence as
you might suspect from the score. UIC was a larger team but could not take
advantage of their size. UVM was much quicker and more skilled at puck
hanling than UIC and seemed to dominate the game more than the score would
indicate. There was an interesting move on the part of UIC coach, Larry
Pedrie. With 4:16 left in the third period, UIC was down by 2 goals, 9-7. The
faceoff was in the UVM end and UIC pulled their goalie - it worked with UIC
scoring about 20 seconds later. The goalie was put back in the net for UIC
until about 1 minute left, at which time he was pulled again. I can not
remember ever seeing a goalie pulled with over 4 minutes left, but it was
certainly an interesting idea.

game 2: Dartmouth 4 - Providence 2
Another good game for the ECAC. Dartmouth played very solid defense which
prevented Providence from getting off very may good shots even when they
controlled the puck in the Dartmouth end. Dartmouth's speed gave them a
number of opportunities and their powerplay continues to be impressive.
Providence was a much larger team than Dartmouth but did not play nearly as
physically as most folks expected them to.

Tomorrow afternoon UIC will meet Providence in the consolation game and
Dartmouth will play Vermont for the third time this season in the final
tomorrow night (they have split the first two games with home wins). The
Dartmouth-UVM rivalry is shaping up as a great one and tomorrow's game should
be a war. I can't wait.
