MSL is working with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) on a NASA grant on climate change. GMRI is sponsoring a wide variety of programs and there is an upcoming speaker series co-hosted by Gateway Community Services<https://gcsmaine.org/> and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute that is focused on climate-driven human migration. The entire series features national experts, kicking off with the session below.

Climate Migration Speaker Series: Myths of Managed Retreat
Monday, March 7, 3:15-4:45pm

GMRI is thrilled to announce the kick-off of the Climate Migration Speaker Series, running the first Monday of each month at 3:15, beginning in March.

People move for lots of reasons and in lots of ways, some of which will be coordinated and supported. In this talk, we'll discuss two types of supported movement, also called managed retreat - community relocation and property buyouts. Come talk about all the reasons why headlines like "Climate change will create millions of refugees" are both incorrect and unhelpful. Through international and US examples, we'll also talk about challenges and opportunities and what you and your community can do.

This event is part of a larger series that will occur on 1st Mondays, March through June, starting at 3:15PM. It will feature scientists and specialists from across the country who will share their expertise in ways designed specifically for youth, teachers, informal educators, and librarians. Specific topics range from an overview of global patterns of climate risk and migration to personal narratives of how residents are adapting to and relocating as caused by climate change.
