Hello hockey fans,
Tonight at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena the Huskies of Michigan Tech
upset the Lakers of Lake Superior State by a score of 5-2. Lake St. jumped out
to an early 2-0 lead by the first intermission as Tech appeared to be a step
slow. However, once the second period started, the game was all Tech. After
Brent Peterson scored to make it a one goal game, Martin Mackacek scored what
was IMHO the weirdest shorthanded goal I've ever seen to tie the game. (Martin
turned in front of his own crease and slapped the puck down the ice. LSSU
gaoltender Blaine Lacher took a step to his right to play it, the puck bounced, and as Lacher moved back to play the puck he fell down, tipping the puck into
his own net.)
A power play goal by Jeff Mikesch gave Tech a 3-2 lead after two. (With
two seconds left in the second and a face-off in front of Tech goalie Jamie Ram,
LSSU pulled Lacher and I noticed that he had lost his cool as he kicked the door
leading into his dressing room.) In the third Tech got another goal from
Peterson to take a 4-2 lead then Lacher really lost his cool. About 3 minutes
into he took a minor for interference as he tripped Mike Figliomeni in front
to the crease. Before the ref skated to the time keeper to announce the penalty
Figi skated by Lacher and said something to him. As he skated away, Lacher
nailed him with IMHO a vicious cross-check, receiving 4 minutes in total. LSSU
burned off this time but with about 12:14 left in the game Lacher received a 10
minute misconduct (apparently for complaining to the ref), as he was skating to
serve the penalty (I assume this means that goalies have to serve misconducts,
could someone verify this for me) Lacher said something else to the ref, drawing
a game misconduct period. (The arena went wild.) Tech added a late empty net
goal by Randy Stevens for the final score of 5-2.
Hopefully this means that Tech is out of their slump (this is their
first win since shutting out Wisconsin 4-0) and that they will be competative at
the GLI and into 1994.
