Summary:

Brown beat Union, 6-5 in overtime on Saturday night. Union had leads
of 4-2 and 5-4 in the 3rd period, but couldn't hold on for the win.
Brown tied the score with 16.9 seconds left, and then scored a
controversial goal at 3:35 of OT to take the win.

Union outscored Brown 2-1 in each of the first 2 periods, led by Chad
Thompson's 2 goals. Brown tied the game in the 3rd, with the tying
goal coming from Steve Kathol at 7:04. But Union wasn't down yet.
Brown goalie Geoff Finch stopped a few good Dutchmen scoring chances
before Reid Simonton and Chris Ford came in on a 2-on-1 break.
Simonton pushed the puck through the defender to Ford who tapped it
past Finch. The Union crowd was really into it - even Coach
Delventhal was waving his arms and yelling to the crowd to get them
going. The Dutchmen had a great chance to put it away, but Chris
Albert's shot with less than 2 minutes left hit off the post. Brown
pulled Finch with about a minute left. With 16.9 seconds left, Chris
Kaban sent a very nice pass out in front to Mike Flynn. Flynn put it
home to tie the score, bringing back memories of the Yale game 2 years
ago, when Yale tied Union with just 9 seconds left before beating the
Dutchmen in overtime.

The overtime period was pretty even, although Union did not manage a
shot on goal. The winning goal came on a shot into a big crowd in
front of Gallant. The puck bounced past Gallant, who was taken down
in the crowd in his crease. Gallant, his defense, and Delventhal all
argued that the goal should not have been allowed, but it did and
Brown escaped Achilles with 2 points. Brown coach Bob Gaudet was
quoted by the Schenectady Gazette, "It was an ugly way to win a game.
They deserved better." Delventhal said, "We should have been clearing
out in front. We shouldn't have been letting their guys stand right
there in front of Mike. He played a great game all night long. To
have to lose a game on a goal like that is a real downer. This is
real hard to take."

But really, the overtime period should not have been necessary. Union
needs to learn to protect a 3rd period lead. They also had 3rd period
leads get away in the loss at Clarkson and the tie with Lowell. Mike
Gallant played another great game. He made 38 saves a night after
saving 31 against Harvard.

Union falls to 0-4 in the ECAC, 2-4-1 overall. Brown is now 5-2-1 in
the ECAC, 5-2-2 overall. The Dutchmen will finish their 4-game
homestand next Saturday night against Princeton before breaking for
Christmas.
