CC regained first place in the WCHA bye beating St. Cloud this afternoon at
the Air Force Academy, the only home team in the league to win the first game
of this weekend's series. Both teams started out slow, with St. Cloud finally
scoring one in the first period to take the lead. A third of the way through
the second, CC evened the score, only to have St. Cloud return the favor to
regain the lead on a CC defense lapse less than a minute later. CC almost had
a goal a little later, but the whistle had been blown before it went in. On
a power play CC evened again at 2, but again had the same thing happen and St.
Cloud regained the lead at 3-2. A few minutes before the end of the period,
CC tied it again, but this time the Tigers scored again less than a minute
later to finally take the lead at 4-3. Early in the third CC scored a fifth
time, and St. Cloud pulled out Cooper and put Sjerven in. Finally some good
hockey was being played, but no one scored until 44 seconds left in the game
after St. Cloud had pulled Sjerven for the extra man. They pulled within
one, but after a time-out by St. Cloud to pull Sjerven again, CC gained
control of the puck and Jay McNeill scored an open net goal with only 15
seconds left to seal the win at 6-4. Saves for the game were 18 for St. Cloud
and 24 for CC's Bach. The teams meet at the AFA again tomorrow afternoon at
2pm.
