In what had to be the worst defensive sham of a game I've ever
seen, the Clarkson University Golden Knights edged the Union College
Dutchmen, 8-7 in Potsdam.
Union got out of the gate fast as Clarkson fell into their habit
of falling behind early. Union's first goal came when a Dutchmen
broke out 1-on-1 with CU defenseman Ed Henrich. The Union player
smoked Henrich ala Brad May-Ray Bourque and beat Clarkson goalie
Jason Currie. The defense's failure to clear a rebound led the
Union's second goal. After a Clarkson power play (where they almost
totally controlled the puck but over=passed themselves to 0 shots on
goal), Union broke out 3 on 1 and Currie had no chance on the play.
With Union up 3-0, Clarkson coach Mark Morris replaced Currie with
freshman Gregg Malicke.
Clarkson got their first goal before the 1st intermission, I
believe. In the second period, Knights freshman Jean-Francois
Houle skated down the left wing faked the pass and beat
Union goalie Luigi VIlla on the short side. Clarkson tied
the game a few minutes later. Union made it 4-3 when they
got a flurry of shots and knocked down Malicke as the shot
was going in. The goal was not waved off. Clarkson tied
it again but Union went up again on a similar play when
a Union player was lying on top of a Clarkson player in the
crease as the shot was released (actually, it was this
goal that should have been waved off not the other one).
Morris yanked Malicke and re-inserted Currie. Union made it
6-4 on a point shot passed a screened Currie.
Clarkson came out flying in the third. Clarkson broke out 2 on
2 and a centering pass was tipped past Villa. Houle tied the game
when he broke down left wing, did a complete 360 spin (faking out
two defenders) and centered it to Kevin Murphy (?) who beat
Villa. The Knights took their first regulation lead of the
season when Craig Conroy won a faceoff and walked in on Villa
and beat him high to the short side.
Union coach Bruce Delventhal proceeded to replace Villa with
Mike Gallant. Another failure to clear the zone led to
Union's 7th goal with only about 6:00 left in the game. However,
much like last night's RPI game, a late power play determined
the game. A Clarkson player was about to break free in the
...on Gallant when he was hauled down by the Union defender
(not a bad penalty to take). Surprisingly, ref Pat MacConaghy
who had not called many penalties, called the Dutchman for
hooking. A few seconds later, Brian Mueller got the puck
walked in a centered it to Murphy who scored the game winning
goal with around 1:10 left in the game. Clarkson ran out the
remainder of the clock.
Both teams defense's looked awful (to say the least). Currie
and Villa each made several big saves (as did, to a lesser
extent, Gallant and Malicke). but they had little chance on
the almost-infinite odd-man rushes.
