HOCKEY WINS AT CONNECTICUT COLLEGE, 6-4

NEW LONDON, CT-Junior forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) scored the game-winning goal with 3:06 remaining and sophomore goaltender Ben Vandervies (Hanna, AB/Golden Rockets-KJHL) made 36 saves to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team to a 6-4 victory over host Connecticut College in a non-conference game at Dayton Arena Saturday.

McDonald took a pass from senior defenseman Justin Pye (Medford, MA/Bridgton Academy), went from one end of the rink to another and fired a shot past CC goaltender Andrew Margolin at 16:54 of the third period. Senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) scored into an empty net at 19:01 to complete the scoring.

Senior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) put UMass Dartmouth ahead at 2:46 of the first period, but Will Einstein and Marc Roper scored goals 1:24 seconds apart to put the Camels ahead, 2-1, at the 9:04 mark. Freshman forward Shaun Walters (Plymouth, MUI/Peoria Stars-CSHL) tied the score at 12:43, but Keith Veronesi made it 3-2, CC at 14:47 of the first period.

Sophomore forward Ryan Ruddock (Amesbury, MA/Eastern Kodiaks-IJHL) tied the score for UMD with a goal at 10:58 of the second period.

Freshman defenseman Steve Ginand (Milford, MA/Northern Cyclones-AtJHL) gave the Corsairs a 4-3 lead with a power play goal after Dudley won an offensive zone face-off at 7:42 of the third period, but Veronesi scored his second goal of the game at 9:34 to tie the game for the final time.

“With four league games over the next two weeks, we didn’t want to go into that part of the schedule on a two-game losing streak, and we battled back,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It was an excellent effort by our team, and a very satisfying win. Despite the fact that we have a number of new players in the lineup, we are continuing to improve.”
The Camels outshot the Corsairs, 40-20. Vandervies earned the first win of his career at UMass Dartmouth, and was named the first star of the game. Margolin stopped 14 shots for the Camels. UMass Dartmouth scored on two of six power play opportunities, while giving up one power play goal in six chances.
The Corsairs improved to 3-2-1 with the victory, while the Camels dropped to 1-2-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Westfield State Thursday evening.
