HOCKEY TEAM WINS AT FRANKLIN PIERCE, 4-1

WINCHENDON, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead and defeated host Franklin Pierce, 4-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Winchendon School Ice Arena Saturday night.

Senior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) and freshman forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored power play goals to put the Corsairs on top in the first period. Grant was assisted by freshman defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) and freshman forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) at the 6:55 mark. Stahl scored at 18:08, assisted by sophomore defenseman Graeme Bourne (Redlands, CA/Campbell River Storm) and junior forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy). 

Senior forward Mike McNulty (Hingham, MA/Winchendon Academy) and senior defenseman Jon Finn (Warwick, RI/Boston Harborwolves) scored in the second period to put UMass Dartmouth ahead, 4-0. Freshman forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) assisted on both goals. McNulty scored at 5:14, Finn at 10:42. Freshman forward Billy Carroll (Duxbury, MA/Bridgton Academy) also assisted on McNulty’s goal. Rob Perretta scored a power play goal for the Ravens at 16:15.

The Corsairs converted two of their four power play opportunities while stopping FPC on six of their seven chances. UMass Dartmouth out shot the Ravens, 29-26. Freshman goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 25 saves in winning his first start for the Corsairs, while Jon Tuttle made 25 stops for Franklin Pierce.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 11-8-1 and 9-3-0 in the ECAC Northeast with the victory, while FPC dropped to 6-15-0 and 4-9-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Wentworth in an ECAC Northeast Conference game Wednesday evening.
