HOCKEY TEAM FALLS TO SALVE REGINA, 4-3

NEW BEDFORD, MA–Salve Regina scored twice in each of the first two periods and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team, 3-2, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Wednesday evening.

Trailing, 4-2, entering the third period, the Corsairs scored a power play goal to draw to within a goal at the 8:33 mark. Sophomore forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) converted a goal-mouth pass from freshman forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) with UMass Dartmouth holding a two-man advantage. But the Seahawks held them off the rest of the way.

Each team scored twice in the second period, which ended with Salve Regina leading, 4-2. Senior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) scored a power play goal, deflecting freshman defenseman Mickey Dudley’s (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) slap shot past SRU freshman goalie Pat Enloe (Stuart, FL/Avon Old Farms) to put UMass Dartmouth on the scoreboard and cut the Seahawks’ lead to 2-1 at 2:17. Senior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) also assisted. Sophomore forward Pat Welch (Dorchester, MA/Bay State Breakers) tied the game at 6:46 when he shoveled home the rebound of a shot by senior defenseman Jon Finn (Warwick, RI/Boston Harborwolves).

SRU took a 3-2 lead when junior forward Jake Pickard (Wellfleet, MA/Nauset Regional HS) scored on a shot from the right circle at the 8:45 mark. Sophomore forward Tyler Trott (Rehoboth, MA/Tilton School) made it 4-2 when he scored at 11:59.

The Seahawks had taken a 2-0 lead after one period. Junior forward Conor McCahill (Highlands Ranch, CO/Highlands) put the Seahawks on top when he re-directed home a pass from sophomore forward Patrick Bambery (Braintree, MA/Kents Hill School) at the 12:47 mark. SRU doubled their lead a little more than two minutes later when sophomore defenseman Nathaniel Burns (Sandwich, MA/St. Mark’s School) fired a wrist shot from the point past junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors). Sophomore forward Tyler Trott (Rehoboth, MA/.Tilton School) and senior forward Mike Mallette (Johnston, RI/Mount St. Charles) drew assists.

“Salve was very opportunistic tonight,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “They jumped out early on a three on two break when they got the first goal. We had our chances, but we didn’t finish them, and Pat Enloe played well for them in goal.”

The Corsairs converted two of their eight power play opportunities while stopping SRU on all three of theirs. UMass Dartmouth out shot the Seahawks, 42-20. Green and freshman goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) combined to make 16 saves for the Corsairs, while Enloe stopped 39 shots for Salve Regina.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 10-8-1 and 8-3-0 in the ECAC Northeast with the loss, while SRU improved to 7-9-2 and 5-5-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Franklin Pierce in an ECAC Northeast Conference game Saturday night, while Salve Regina will visit Wentworth Sunday afternoon.
