HOCKEY TEAM VICTORIOUS AT SALVE REGINA, 3-1

PORTSMOUTH, RI–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored the first three goals of the game and went on to defeat host Salve Regina, 3-1, in a non-conference game at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink Wednesday night.

Freshman forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) figured in the Corsairs’ first two goals. He staked UMass Dartmouth to an early 1-0 lead when he converted a pass from classmate Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) at 5:15 of the first period, then helped set up a goal by junior forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) at the 14:41 mark. Senior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) also assisted.

Freshman forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) made it 3-0 with a second-period goal. Sophomore forward Billy Carroll (Duxbury, MA/Bridgton Academy) and sophomore forward Paul Jerusik (Springfield, MA/Lawrence Academy) drew assists.

Salve Regina got on the scoreboard with a goal from Joseph Errico at 3:08 of the third period.

“We did a very good job,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It’s the third consecutive game that we’ve only given up one goal, so we’re very happy about that.”

The Corsairs, who were blanked on their four power play opportunities while stopping SRU on both of their chances, out shot the Seahawks, 61-22. Junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) made 21 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Chase Goodrich made 58 stops for SRU.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 8-4-1 with the victory, while Salve Regina dropped to 4-8-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Western New England College in an Eastern College Athletic Conference game on Saturday.
