HOCKEY TEAM WINS AT ASSUMPTION, 5-1

WORCESTER, MA– The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored four goals in the second period and went on to defeat host Assumption, 5-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Buffone Rink Saturday night.

Senior forward Jeff Grant’s (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) second-period goal gave the Corsairs the lead for good, 22 seconds after Assumption had tied the game at 1-1. Grant converted passes from senior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) and freshman forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) at 5:29 of the second period. Junior forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy), Garabedian and sophomore forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) then scored within a span of less than three minutes late in the second period to five the Corsairs a commanding 5-1 advantage after two periods.

Freshman defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) gave UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead, scoring the only goal of the first period at 13:19. Patrick Fitzgibbons tied it for the Greyhounds at 5:07 of the second period.

“It was a good effort,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It was a nip and tuck game, and we scored three goals late in the second period, and that was the difference. It was an important road victory, and it keeps us unbeaten in the league.”

The Corsairs, who converted none of their five power play opportunities while stopping Assumption on all three of their chances, out shot the Greyhounds, 37-16. Junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) made 15 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while David Pinkham stopped 32 shots for Assumption.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 7-4-1 and 6-0-0 in ECAC Northeast play with the victory, while Assumption dropped to 5-9-0 and 2-3-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Salve Regina in a non-conference game Wednesday evening.
