CORSAIRS WILL RAISE THE BANNER SATURDAY

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA–It’s becoming an annual tradition for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team.

For the second consecutive season, the Corsairs will raise banners commemorating their Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast championship and advancement to the quarter-finals of the NCAA Division III Championships when they open their home season Saturday afternoon against conference rival Plymouth State. Game time is 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena in New Bedford.

The ceremony will include participants from each of the Corsairs’ 10 previous conference championship teams. “Each of the captains from our 20 championship teams dating back to 1983 will participate in the ceremony,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “That includes the captains of the 1983 and 1984 teams, the Findley brothers, Tom and John; Paul Moore of our ’85 team; Scott Pearsons from the ’89 team; Chris Smith from the ’93 team; Paul Olenik from the ’95 team; Mark Salvi from ’96; Steve Bartkus from ’98; Ian Seaver from the 2006 team and Jim Foley from last year’s team.” Each captain will be introduced prior to the unveiling of the banner. After the banner is raised, UMass Dartmouth Director of Athletics Ian Day will participate in a ceremonial opening face-off.

The Corsairs will put their 2-0-0 record this season and 28-0-1 mark in their last 29 home games on the line against the Panthers, 0-0-1 with a 2-2 tie in a non-conference game against Nichols in their season opener November 10th. PSU came back from a 4-0 deficit to forge a 4-4 tie in last season’s matchup at the Waterville Valley Arena before Foley’s goal 1:40 into overtime gave the Corsairs the victory.

UMass Dartmouth will continue their home stand Tuesday with a game against Babson.
