MEN'S HOCKEY KNOCKS OFF PRINCETON, 6-4
Three-goal first period helps Engineers to victory

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) scored three goals in the first
period and went on to defeat Princeton University, 6-4, in an Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) contest at the Houston Field House in
Troy, N.Y. With the win, the Engineers are now 8-5-2 overall and 3-2-1
in
the ECAC. The Tigers fall to 4-8-0 overall and 4-6-0 in the league.

Sophomore defenseman Alexander Valentin put the home team ahead at 5:20
of
the first period when he scored on a wrist shot from the middle of the
blue
line. C.J. Hanafin picked up the lone assist on Valentin's goal, his
second of the season. Freshman forward Tommy Green doubled the Engineers
lead when he swept home a rebound of a Vic Pereira shot. Brad Farynuk
was
also credited with an assist on the goal, which came at 7:25 of the
first. A power play goal on a slapshot by senior defenseman Scott Basiuk
gave RPI a 3-0 lead after the first period. Valentin, who had a goal and
an assist on Friday night, and Nick Economakos also earned points on the
goal, Basiuk's fourth of the season.

Hanafin scored an unassisted goal at 11:25 of the second period his
third
goal of the season to put Rensselaer ahead, 4-0, but Princeton would
answer before the period was up. Sophomore center Dustin Sproat scored
on
a rebound from the right side of the crease at the 18:40 mark. Neil
Stevenson-Moore, who took the initial shot, and Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer
assisted the goal, which was a power play tally.

The Tigers just needed 33 seconds in the third period to pull within two
goals as junior Mike Patton tapped the puck into the back of the net for
his third of the season. Freshman Grant Goeckner-Zoeller and sophomore
Patrick Neundorfer were credited with the assists. Princeton made it 4-3
with a power play goal at 5:39. Senior defenseman Steve Slaton, Patton
and
Goeckner-Zoeller combined on goal, with Slaton scoring from the left
faceoff circle. The Engineers re-gained their two-goal cushion when
senior
Conrad Barnes took a pass from Kevin Croxton, cut from left to right and
slid the puck past the netminder at 16:40 of the third period. Princeton
again pulled to within one goal when Goeckner-Zoeller scored with the
Tigers' netminder on the bench for an extra attacker with 39 seconds
left. Patton and Slaton earned the assists. RPI sophomore Kirk MacDonald
sealed the win with an empty net goal with just 15 seconds remaining in
the
period.

Rensselaer's Nathan Marsters finished with 24 saves while Princeton's
Eric
Leroux stopped 32 shots, including 14 in the first period alone.

The Engineers are idle until December 28 when they host the 53rd Annual
Rensselaer/HSBC Holiday Tournament with Mercyhust, Colgate and
Northeastern. Princeton will be back in action next Saturday night when
they travel to Northeastern for a non-league affair (7pm).
