Now that all the conference tournaments are out of the way, it's time to
announce the winners of the Pick the Post-Season Tournaments contests. For
Contest #1, in which the later rounds were weighted more than the earlier
ones, the overall winner is...
Dave Belfiori
who put up a big 240 points, 21 ahead of runner-up Iyer Venkatesan. Let us
all pause a moment to appreciate Dave's keen college hockey acumen (luck),
unbelievable prognosticating ability (sheer dumb luck), and amazing grasp of
the complexities of tournament play (it's luck, I tell you, and the fact
that
I finished 60-some points behind has nothing to do with it!)
As for the individual conference winners...
Jay Kryzston took the honors in the ECAC with 50 points.
A tight race in Hockey East came down to a tie between Nathan Hampton
and the
CHODR rating, with a perfect 48 points each. Nathan won the first
tiebreaker
(championship game score prediction), coming two points closer to the
actual
game score than CHODR did.
Dave Belfiori finished atop the CCHA with 58 points.
Matt Carberrys 55 points paced the WCHA.
Both William Sangrey and Steve Syrett picked the MAAC perfectly to
finish tied
with 44 points each, and the first tiebreaker resolved nothing, as each was
one point off the actual score. William won the second tiebreaker (total
goals scored in the tournament), coming eight goals closer to the actual
result than Steve did.
The CHA produced a seven-way tie at 36 points among Craig Powers, Iyer
Venkatesan, Matt Carberry, Craig Roberts, John MacKinnon, Terry Casper, and,
of all people, your humble contest administrator. I won the first
tiebreaker
by picking the final score right on the nose. (Keeping me grounded is the
fact that USCHO reporter Geof F. Morris picked every CHA tourney game right,
though with a lot of hedging, and would have picked up 40 points in the
contest)
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners, and
thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you picked
the score of the Hockey East championship game (actually 3-1) to be 4-2,
you
would get two points; if you picked 5-0, you would get three points; and if
you picked 2-1, you would get one point. Obviously, the lower point score
the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the tournament and the actual number. Again, the lower the
point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For Hockey East, the championship game score was 3-1.
For the MAAC, the championship game score was 6-4, and the total goals
scored
in the tournament was 50.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game
had been picked to win.
