Day 3 at the T Humes tournament in Montreal the University of Toronto
Varsity Blues defeated the Panthers of Middlebury College 3-1. It was a
rather dozy Sunday afternoon contest. In the end, Toronto clung to their
lead and Middlebury rarely pushed the issue.

Both sides went close to scoring early on. Middlebury's skating and
passing, though not up to standard, were slightly crisper. UT looked like
they were running a practice session. Meanwhile, the zebras, like the
tourney organization, remained horrendous. After a series of borderline
calls on Toronto, they notched a shorthanded strike from Kim Malcher.
Jillian Savin (Andrea Palry) made it 2-0 UT when she used an MC defender as
a screen and fired high glove side.

The second was a sleeper. Toronto got their version of a killer goal in
the opening minute when Susie Laska (Bree Kruklis) cruised in and flipped
high near post. You would have thought Middlebury would have roared into
action, but instead the snooze session continued. Finally, the Panthers'
fresher Rose Babst (Kristin Reid, Angela Kapus) snatched their lone tally
off a miss hit shot.

There was no scoring in the tedious third period. MC couldn't pull the
trigger, while UT was happy to quietly run test patterns.

Toronto is boringly predictable. For unknown reasons, they seem to love to
board, which is curious, since in general they are a clean side.
Nevertheless, I always come away from watching UT games unfulfilled.

Middlebury couldn't finish. They strung together some good passes but
never had the sniper's touch. There were too many Panthers stopping and
not flowing, which wasted a ton of angular momentum. First-years Rose
Babst and Lorna Gifis exhibited a lot of poise and both played the game
with drive. Reid and Kapus deserve full snaps for their high level puck
movement. They work so well together. Overall, not a hockey weekend to
remember.
