(I'm going to stop apologizing for the lateness of the reports; I'm always
having some delay or another with the internet service or work or
... With the web most people know all the facts anyway, I'm just giving
my two cents to keep Hockey-L busy ... As always, if you want to read
it, fine. If not, that's fine, too.)

COMMENTS
--------
Boston College took the first game of the 2 game set Friday night by
holding off heavy Maine pressure during the 2nd period and then exploding
for 3 goals in 3 1/2 minutes in the third period for the 4-1 triumph.
Mike Lephart ended up with the gamewinner after a extended carry in the
Maine zone and a scramble finally produced a wraparound score. Marty
Hughes took advantage of a Maine giveaway to get the third goal that took
the winds out of Maine's sails and prevented any chance at a comeback.

Both teams had their chances in the first, with power plays providing the
spark. Brian Gionta drew the first one with a fairly clear dive trying
to split the D in the slot, but the Black Bears killed it off strongly.
Maine got their power play on another weak call, and BC also killed it
well, with Gionta being disruptive on the forecheck. Back at even strength,
the Eagles had a flurry of chances, with Morrison holding off Voce on 2
tries. The pressure produced another power play, and this produced the
first BC goal. After forechecking efforts behind the net, Maine tried to
clear the puck up the middle. The weak clear was intercepted by Hughes,
who immediately slid a long pass to the low left circle for Eaves to hammer
into the goal on a 1-timer. Play was up-and-down for a few minutes after
that, and then Metcalf took his 3rd penalty of the period trying to jam
the puck at the net and taking a slash on the goalie. A subsequent penalty
gave the Eagles a 5-on-3, and they had lots of pressure during the power
play, but Morrison stood strong to keep the score 1-0. Late in the period
Maine started to push forward and get pressure, finally drawing a power
play of their own. Lucas Lawson broke in clean after a missed check and
tried a move across the face of the goal from right-to-left. Clemmensen
followed him across and forced a low angle shot that missed scoring by
inches.

The second period opened with another early BC power play, and both teams
had chances on that one, with Lephart and Gionta firing for BC, and Kariya
and Lawson trying for shorthanded scores for the Black Bears. Maine killed
it off and then started carrying the play in the period. A hard slap shot
broke off Clemmensen's glove and slid through the crease, then a couple of
rebounds forced more saves. BC took a penalty, with Maine getting several
more shots, then took a dumb after-the-whistle hit to give up a 5-on-3.
Clemmensen came up large, making several saves, some point blank. Somehow
the puck stayed out of the net, though it felt as though it was only a matter
of time until the game was tied. Matching penalties opened up the ice, and
BC got a couple of shots with a 3-on-2 rush, then Maine cranked up the
pressure again. More saves by Clemmensen, then the Black Bears got a golden
chance as Allen was knocked down at the BC blue line by a Maine forward,
allowing a Maine break-in. Clemmensen managed to save that bid and an
immediate rebound, but BC had a hard time clearing the puck. Eventually a
weak clear was intercepted and a slap shot sent over the net. As all turned
to follow the puck, it rebounded off the stanchion of the glass and bounced
to the right side of the cage, where Donovan collected it and popped it in
the open net. More Maine pressure in the last minute of the period forced
BC to scramble to keep the puck out; lots of bodies down in the slot/crease
at one point. It ended 1-1 but could have been more for Maine; Clemmensen
had another strong period to keep BC even.

The third opened just like the first two, with BC getting an early power
play. A hard Eaves shot on a rush up the right side appeared to hit the
post and bounce in, but the puck was in the air and Morrison reached back
to swat it away as no goal was awarded. Maine killed the rest of it well
and had some forecheck pressure of their own. But BC charged back, too,
with Bill Cass sending a shot through a screen and clanging it off the post.
Both teams worked hard to check players closely and prevent many shots for
a few minutes, and it was unclear who would break the deadlock. Finally,
BC broke up ice, with Lephart carrying the puck speedily down the left
boards and deep into the Maine zone. As defenders played positionally to
protect the center of the zone and cover trailing forwards, he continued
all the way around the net and up the right boards, then cut to the slot
as a defenseman peeled off in anticpation of a drop pass. Alone, he waited,
then slid left and fired a backhand shot into the jam in front. It was saved,
but several players whacked at the rebound. It ultimately went behind the
net, and Lephart continued skating to pick it up all alone, as all the
bodies were tied up in the slot/crease area, including the goalie. Lephart
skated around the net to the right side again and stuffed it on the
wraparound before Morrison or any defender could get there. Coach Walsh
went ballistic, screaming for an interference call on the various bodies that
jammed in front of the net, but no call was made and the score counted.

BC had lots of energy after that goal and immediately pressed for another
score, forcing Walsh to call a timeout to ask the Maine players to calm
down and get back to business. It seemed to work at first, with Maine
getting a rush up ice and a scoring chance, but had it blocked by the BC
defense. Then, after a BC clear down ice, Morrison came out of the net
to the right circle to play the puck away. He looked up to make sure he
sent it away from the BC forward advancing into the zone, and that moment
of taking his eye off the puck proved fatal as he fanned on the clear. He
desperately tried to reach it but BC's Hughes got there first and rounded
the goalie to the outside, then fired a low angle wrister into the vacated
net. This took the tension out of the game as BC celebrated and the Maine
players tried to console their goalie. BC kept the momentum less than two
minutes later by gaining control in their own end as Maine pressed forward,
and Allen sent a great breakout pass to Kobasew. He flew down the right
side on a 2-on-1 breakaway, and fired a pass across the front of the
goal to Kolanos, who swept it low under the goalie for the final score.
The last few minutes were fairly quiet, with Maine having little energy left
and BC having most of the possession.

This one was a tense game for most of the way until the BC burst in the
middle of the third period. A fair number of shots were taken, somewhat
surprising given the defensive style of Maine and BC's usual successes at
controlling the puck. Clemmensen was solid, not necessarily spectacular
in the 2nd period but very effective in keeping the puck out. BC was able
to finish off their chances in a way that Maine could not, perhaps
foreshadowing the Saturday night game. Some of the Maine players had very
good games, but there was a feeling that the entire team didn't necessarily
show up mentally, an unusual trait for a Shawn Walsh-coached team. The
line of Kerluke/Liscak/Dimitrakos, particularly, was not their normal
strength, an observation that held the next night as well.

For the Eagles, it was another good game in their recent streak, with
very good defending and goaltending (most of the time), and luck when they
had their bad moments (the 2nd period.) The third line of Hughes/Dolinar/
Lephart had their best scoring success in a long time. The top lines
played well also, though Gionta's hard work this night didn't reward him
with points. (It was a different story on Saturday, however.) J.D.
Forrest continues to play with great instincts, even better since he
returned from the World Junior Championship tournament. All the BC freshmen
have played well all season, and is one of the reasons they have been more
consistent throughout the year.

Saturday's rematch would tell whether Maine could come back and play with
the energy and attack that they showed in Friday's 2nd period, or if BC
would wear them down. After winning the game in Maine 7-2, and winning
this one, it seemed hard to believe that BC could sweep the season series
against the Black Bears (something that hadn't happened since the 1989-90
season.) I think most people have heard about Saturday's result by now,
a BC 7-2 win, with a spectacular first period. Notes on that one to
follow later.
