I heard from a source here which I'd call exceptionally reliable, that
the talks about ND joining the Big Ten revolve around their not getting
another TV contract comperable to the current NBC contract. The upshot of
what I was told is that it is currently being assumed that ND won't manage
another TV contract like what it has now. It would in 2001 join the Big
Ten in all sports (hockey being a unknown issue at this point) and would
get certain accomedations with regard to TV, schedule, and marketing
control. IE: They get to keep all money generated by their own
goods and such. Of course that flies out a window if somehow they win a
national title or develop into a viable property that would draw another
TV contract. Extending thinking is that the Big East is more spread out
than the Big Ten, they'd save money in their non-revenue sports that way.
Likewise playing the Big Ten in other sports would be more of a draw in
basketball and such. And lastly, if the hype over playing Mich. just once
a year was great, imagine the hype and attention over ND playing Mich.
MSU, OSU, Penn State, Purdue, among other EVERY year, plus USC and other
in non-conference games. I suspect their TV accomedation would revolve
around their brinning more attention and more of a national audience to
their football ratings than they can get otherwise.

I'm neither a Big Ten or a ND fan so I really don't care. But it makes
sounds logical to me, and given who told me, I have zero reason not to
believe it to be true.
