Is the automatic bid based upon regular season HE champion or the winner of
the playoff series ? If the playoffs do indeed determine the automatic
tournament bids, then the real question is what the seedings are for the
PLAYOFF series.

I do realize that some consideration is given to regular season
performance, particularly if an upset is posted in the end-of-season
conference playoffs (as happens sometimes particularly in basketball
conference championships) and a top-ranked team who was upset would then be
"denied" a bid to the NC$$ field.
