Sunday afternoon at Matthews the Northeastern Huskies defeated the Crimson of
Harvard 3-1. It was one of those games where one team (NU) dominates play,
creates numerous scoring opportunities but has to wait forever for the puck to
go into the net. In the end the class of the NU performance provided the
winning edge.

As the match started, Northeastern was creating space and Harvard was
attempting counterattacks. The Huskies were stringing together pretty passes
and putting on the pressure. However, Jen Gerometta (Kiirsten Suurkask, Angie
Francisco) opened the scoring for Harvard when she knocked in a loose puck.
The play was made by a nice 1-2 counter break by Francisco and Suurkask.

In the second the Huskies continued to make all the chances, but the puck
stayed out of the Crimson net. Finally NU's Jennie Setaro (Hilary Witt, Emily
Pemrick) ripped a shot from the point high into the netting to tie the match.
Pemrick (Witt, Stephanie Acres) got credit for a second Northeastern goal that
was actually kicked into the net. Some people might find that justice since
in the first period a Husky goal that deflected in off a skate properly was
disallowed. Overall, the zebras did not have a stellar weekend.

The final frame was nothing to write home about. Kathryn Waldo finished the
scoring, and made it 3-1 NU when she drilled her try off a post and in. It
fit the flow of the game that the Huskies won by two.

Harvard is making themselves and the game of ice hockey look horrendous.
Francisco was the only Crimson player to try to use skating and passing to
play the game.

Henry Ford would be proud of Northeastern coach Heather Linstad the way she
used interchangeable parts. Put any two Husky players on the ice, they know
how to use each other, create space and develop a scoring chance. It was
great fun watching all the variations do just that. The woman of the match
was Setaro. Her defensive breakup plays were impressive. She seemed to be
able to step up and take the puck off any incoming forward with ease.
Setaro's attacking forays were also brilliant. Keri-Anne Allan also played
exceptionally well on the blue line. Her skill to chance the point of attack
was excellent. Jaime Totten has to be the defender I would most want on the
ice in a tough situation. She is so cool under fire and always makes the
smart move to get the puck forward. In goal, Shannon Meyers made some
critical saves. Up front, Jennifer Santerre was moving extremely well. She
always seemed to be the first to the puck and also managed to skate well off
the puck. Acres made a number of brilliant passes. Witt was burning up the
ice and on another day would have been a multiple goal scorer. Witt has the
ability to take things as they are, and make the most of it. That skill
creates many splendid chances for Northeastern. Overall, the NU team speed
needs to get faster, but the squad plays together and is making progress.
