The Usafa Falcons opened with a victory edging Ric Schafer's Irish 8-4.
The Irish led 2-1 after 1 and 3-2 after 2 and it was looking like a bad
night for the falcons. Early in the third, they exploded with 4 goals in the
first 5 minutes (2 of them short handed as I recall) The first two, to go
ahead seemed to stagger the irish, and they seemed unable to cope for a while.
To be fair, though, Ric's team played over 55 minutes of strong hockey, and had
Air Force not gotten a few bounces their way, the game could well have ended
differently. The teams were much better matched than the score indicated.
Lots of penalties, a few bad (in my opinion) calls, but the play seemed clean
and not at all chippy. I believe a lot of the calls were for holding and
interference (can you say new rules???) but will have to see if the paper
prints the penalties for confirmation. I'll probably post a quicky about
saturday's game tomorrow night, and then maybe enter box scores Sunday.
