MAINE 7 UMass-Amherst 2

Maine jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the heals of two Brad Mahoney goals
(that's right, no joke!!), extended it to 6-2 after two and coasted home for
a 7-2 at Amherst tonight.
Six different Maine players scored goals in the victory. Scott Parmentier
scored at 5:27 on the power-play to get things started, then Brad Mahoney
added his two from Tony Tempestilli at 6:26 and 11:36 of the period.
Sal Mananaro scored 9 seconds into the second to cut the Maine lead to 3-1,
but Tim Lovell scored at 6:21 on the powerplay again to make it 4-1, then
Jeff Tory scored a minute later short-handed to make it 5-1. Manganaro added
another one at 9:15 for UMass on the power-play to cut it to 5-2, but that
was as close as they would get as Brad Purdie scored at 11:57 to drive UMass
sophomore goal-tender Dave Killduff from the game.
Jamie Thompson scored 3:30 into the third period to finish the scoring.
Surprisingly Maine did not play very disiplined at times tonight, and it is
good in a way as Shawn Walsh will harp on that and give a focal point for
tomorrow night. Maine gave UMass 8 Power-plays, but they could only convert
on 1. UMass did a pretty good job at staying out of the box, taking only 1
penalty in the first period, but took 3 in the second and two in the third.
Maine was 2-6 on the power-play, so UMass did a pretty good job at killing
it off. However Maine was 2-4 and once the game was out of hand Walsh used
some different PP combinations, and may have created problems.
The first period was the story of the game. Even though Maine led 3-0, the
score was not indicitive of the play by UMass. Maine only outshot them 14-8
in the period, but the skill level of the players showed, as Allison stoned
3 quality chances, and Maine converted on the other end.
Freshman Brian Regan played well for UMass coming into the game at 11:57 of
the second period, and only allowed one goal.
With the win, Maine gains a game on Boston University who lost to UNH last
night 4-2. Maine moved to 22-1-6, 10-0-6 in Hockey East. Maine is now two
games ahead of BU. UMass drops to 3-17-2 overall, and 2-12-0 in Hockey
East. Same two teams, same time tomorrow.
