If this is like kissing your sister, St. Lawrence had a very
attractive sister tonight. Burke Murphy squeezed in a third
rebound just before the horn sounded to get SLU a hard-earned
tie in their first meeting with Lake Superior State since a
memorable 4-3 OT loss in the 1988 Championship game at Lake
Placid. This time the scored stayed 3-3 through the OT period,
despite outstanding chances for each club. SLU put in another
outstanding effort and managed to stay with LSSU, although they
were just barely hanging on at times in the second period. It's
hard to believe that LSSU has a sub-0.500 record. They were
strong, tenacious, and surprisingly quick.

Strachan's goal in the first period was an incredible individual
effort as he went back into his own zone to gather a loose puck,
went around his net (appearing to pick up momentum like those
space probes that sling around planets), whizzed down the side
past the entire Saint team and put the puck past Bracco. That
evened up Jeff Kungle's first goal of the season which came on a
blast from the point after Ladouceur won the face-off by kickiing
the puck back to Kungle.

Much of the second period was played in LSSU's offensive zone,
although Bracco only let in one of the 22 official shots on goal-
that came from a disorganized scramble in front of the net. There
was one two minute stretch that saw incredible end-to-end action
with great chances but no goals for either team. SLU finished the
period with a 5-on-3 power play which they controlled well but
couldn't beat Kulick. Gerald Thallaire started off the third period
with a bomb that beat Bracco and went in off the post to give LSSU
a 3-1 lead which looked formidable given their defensive success.
LSSU's freshman Laviolette was particularly good at using his
body to keep any Saint from moving the puck up along the boards.
B. Murphy got the Saints a bit closer, finishing off a mini-break
thanks to a good pass from Ladouceur to tuck the puck past Kulick.
Despite some good pressure, it looked like things would end up 3-2
when the Saints gathered for a face-off in their offensive zone
with Bracco on the bench for an extra skater and just 5 seconds
left on the clock. But B. Murphy managed to get it just past
Kulick at the last possible moment. That gives Burke 7 goals
in SLU's modest 3 game unbeaten streak.

And what about the refs? As posted here earlier, we indeed saw
the Pierre & Gallagher show for the second night in a row. Perhaps
the rumors are true (I'm sure they aren't) that Pierre has been
banned from all the other ECAC rinks. Anyway, he was more
consistent with his usual noticable self, including giving the thumb
to the official running the penalty box. Apparently, Pierre took
offense to this individual's verbal comment on one of his
offsides calls and booted him OUT of the penalty box. I believe
that the individual in question may have deserved his fate, but
only Pierre could do it with such flair. Here's one for you rule
hounds - can this person "serve" in the upcoming SLU-Clarkson
game, or does his "game" misconduct carryover to the next match?
