Stolen from the Duluth-New-s-Tribu-ne, Sunday, Oct. 2, 1994:
(Excerpts from article)

When the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs flood to the ice for the first day of
hockey practice Monday, expect scenes similar to the Haitian occupation.
<Remember, I am just taking this out of the paper. Don't blame me>

The Bulldogs have 20 returning players, a dozen eager freshman and a
handful of other hopefuls that will make ice conditions crowded.

"We have a lot of players," said defenseman Brett Larson, the team's
captain. "There have been 38 guys skating up at campus, and I think
everyone kind of gets the message that there's going to be real
competition for playing time."

Coach Mike Sertich realizes that quantity doesn't mean quality, but he
takes comfort in sending out a veteran team. His No. 1 priority is
replacing do-everything All-American Chris Marinucci, who carried the
team on his way to winning the Hobey Baker Award.

<My own comments follow>
There was one player I had never heard of in the seniors through
sophomores group, and it turns out he came from Kent St. after they
dropped their program, senior Jason Watt, originally from Duluth.
As far as the freshman, there are 3 coming straight from high school, 2
redshirts, and 8 who played in various leagues (USHL, Canadian junior
leagues)
They didn't seem too up on themselves. Sertich said that "the potential
is there. There are players who can make that step up. And, if we're
going to contend, they'll have to."
Senior C/W Rusty Fitzgerald said that they should suprise some people
this year.
Good things that I saw: Top 3 goalies and 7 defenseman are returning, so
if the scoring gets in gear, they could be in it. Also, lots of speed,
which seems to me to be kind of rare for UMD, since we play in a smaller
rink and we seem to have a lot of stronger and not so fast guys in the
past. (Well, not always, Hull, Plante, etc.) Brett Larson returning
with 9 of 14 goals last year on the PP.
Bad things: Not a lot of scoring power returning. Rusty will have to
pick it up in his senior year. Top 3 goalies returning. (Yes, that's
good and bad)
Well, it should be fun either way. I look forward to seeing you
cheeseheads, er, Wisconsin fans at the DECC in 12 short days!
